Thinking of Switching to a Self-Employed Team?
The salon industry is evolving — and more salon owners are exploring the shift from employed staff to a self-employed model. But do you know what’s really involved?
Switching to a self-employed structure can bring flexibility and reduce overheads, but it also comes with critical legal, financial and operational implications you need to understand:
-
Are you clear on the difference between employment and self-employment from a legal standpoint?
-
Do you know how this change affects your insurance, tax obligations, VAT registration, and contracts?
-
Are your team truly self-employed, or are you at risk of misclassification penalties?
-
Have you considered how this shift impacts your salon culture, customer experience, and long-term brand reputation?
This is a big decision, and it needs to be made with the right advice, planning, and structure in place. I support salon owners every step of the way — whether you’re exploring the idea or ready to implement it.
Let’s make sure it’s the right move — and done right.

Linda owns A4B NE and here’s her story…
From a young age, I was full of energy, ambition and a deep love for all things creative – especially in the world of hair and beauty. At just 15, I took my first step into the industry I was passionate about, joining Wildes Hair Salon in Newcastle to begin a three-year apprenticeship. While studying at Tyne Met College, I honed my technical skills and developed a real appreciation for working with people, building confidence through transformation.
Although a diagnosis of asthma eventually steered me away from a salon-based career, the foundation and passion for the hair and beauty industry never left me – it shaped my entire approach to business: people-focused, brand-led, and service-driven.
With a strong flair for sales and customer service, I progressed rapidly through roles in retail and hospitality management, becoming Manfield Shoes’ youngest Manager at 18, just six months after starting as a Christmas temp. From there, I built a 32-year career working with household brands including Principles Fashion, Victoria Wine, Thresher & Wine Rack, and later played a key role in transforming Klick Photo Point into Max Spielmann, now a thriving digital photography business.
But at the heart of everything I’ve done – whether managing multi-million-pound brands, leading teams and projects, or delivering training and development – has always been my love of people, performance and potential.
Today, as a Business Advisor and Consultant, I specialise in helping salon owners, therapists, and beauty professionals grow their businesses with clarity, confidence and control. Whether you’re just starting out or scaling up, I bring decades of real-world experience, deep industry insight, and a genuine passion for helping creative businesses thrive.
Linda also has a business interest in a Local Beauty Salon, giving her first-hand understanding of the challenges faced within the sector.
“After a successful 32 year career in Sales and Senior Business Management, I decided to move into a career where I would put all my success, experience, drive and enthusiasm together to help business owners achieve success and growth…”
